Bimini Deep Sea Fishing Reports: Big Fish Tales

Recent Deep Sea Fishing Catch of the Day:

I recently took a trip to Bimini with a good friend of mine, and we spent a few days fishing with Captain Jerome aboard the Miss Bonita I.  We arrived in Bimini via Chalks Airline seaplane from Miami, and cleared immigration in a few minutes.  We wereWe Arrived in Bimini Via Chalks Airline from Miami, Florida amazed that there were no signs of damage from Hurricanes Floyd and Irene.

Captain Jerome met us at the airport, and after we checked into our cottage at the Bimini Big Game Club, we were ready to go.  By 9:15am we were aboard Miss Bonita I, and heading out of Bimini Bay towards open water.  The wind was blowing out of the northeast and the seas were running about 4 - 5 feet.

This 12-15 Pound Baracuda Was Caught on Our First Day of FishingMate Willie set four lines with ballyhoo and we headed for "the edge" in the lee of the keys south of Bimini.  The water was murky with all the wind and we were not too confident about our prospects for catching any Wahoo.  Around 10:00am we had our first strike.  It was a short fight and we landed a 12-15 pound barracuda.

Willie re-baited the lines and we continued south along the edge toward Cat Cay.  Snap!  - the starboard outrigger released and the fight was on.  This was no barracuda.  The line was flying off the reel and Captain Jerome maneuvered to position Miss Bonita for the fight.  Twenty minutes of battle, and a forty-pound Wahoo hits the deck.  What a beautiful fish.

Captain Jerome and Mate Willie Help Prepare The Day's CatchWe landed 3 more barracuda and had nine more strikes that day before the wind and seas picked up and we headed back to the dock.  Nothing is quite as tasty as a dinner of fresh fish and this Wahoo was terrific.  Thanks to our friends at Fisherman's Restaurant who prepared it.

Saturday morning broke partly sunny and windy.  We left the Big Game Club at 8:00am.  The seas were still running 4 - 5 feet as we headed out to the Gulf Stream.  Miss Bonita's new twin 380 diesels made easy work of the surf and we wasted no time in getting the lines in the water.

One of the great benefits of fishing from Bimini is its close proximity to the Gulf Stream.  You don't waste half the day getting to good fishing.

Fish on!  We saw a beautiful blue, yellow and green colored dolphin fish break the surface.  This fish had hit the starboardPenn Reels are Used Aboard the Miss Bonita I outrigger line which we had running about 120 yards out.  George set the pole in the fighting chair. The fight in this dolphin was surprising!  George landed this forty-two pound beauty after 27 minutes of fight.

The weather broke for a while and the seas calmed a little as the tide change arrived around noon, but the water remained very cloudy.  We were discussing our strategy for the tide change when the starboard outrigger snapped again.  I grabbed the pole and held on as the line just flew off the reel.  This was no forty pounder.

After 17 Minutes of Fighting, This Fish Had Gotten AwayCaptain Jerome again maneuvered Miss Bonita for fighting the big fish, which allowed us to rewind some line.  After 17 minutes of fighting, the line went limp.  When we reeled in the slack line we could tell we had lost a BIG one.  One hook was totally gone and the second was straightened.  Only an extremely large marlin, tuna, or wahoo could have done that.

We had two more billfish strikes, and landed a 15-pound king fish  and a nice-sized mackerel before the weather closed in again and we headed for port.

For those of you who have never been to the Bimini Islands, they are the western most islands in the Bahamas, located just fifty miles off the Florida coast from Miami or Fort Lauderdale.
